 THE  SHORT  FILM   (20 min)

PITCH:
Wendy is losing her memory. What drove her to tattoo her back with a Maori Motif on her 80th birthday? What seemed to have no meaning for her sons seems, after her death, to reveal a mystery that contains them all. To see things that have contours, soothes. To see those that have not, frightens.

SYNOPSIS:
An old woman, Wendy, losing her memory, gets her back tattooed
with a maori motif on her 80th birthday.  The event is such a shock to her sons it causes them to make an urgent decision over her future. Meanwhile, they have their own imperatives to settle. Owen, the eldest, designer in aeronautics, is out of reach. Dalman, an actor living between hotels, is out of work. Joe is out of his depth in his new position as private driver for Ray, a tentacular powerful man. However, Joe takes his mother into his home: a very small house with an idyllic garden where with Patricia, his wife who is a landscaper, he places all his dreams. Their only bedroom is prepared for Wendy. But that very night she passes away.
It is only after scattering her ashes into the sea, that the brothers realize they did not take the time to discover what their mother had tattooed on her skin. What had seemed meaningless now holds a mystery that contains them all. On their way back, in exchange for their mother's remains, the Ocean summons them to save the strangest of creatures: an original mythical being, escaping the temptation of definitive outline - an Octopus.

INTRODUCING   OUR  MAIN  CHARACTERS ...

WENDY - THE MOTHER An agèd ageless woman / Element – Ether
Charismatic and protective, she has provided a classical education for her children - a sense of order, however her sons may have been an obstacle to her past seductive ventures. There has been a sustained relationship to the body as an object of desire and attentive care, which still shows. She lives alone in the family house which seems unchanged, yet in her vulnerability and loss of bearings, her world has taken on new dimensions. Her confused sense of space and time forces her sons to provide order to her present. In the fatigue of this effort, only the youngest, Joe, finds the necessary courage to appease his mother. There is a grace about her, and she does not indulge in her suffering. The void that has divided her sons, may reside in the mysterious absence of their father.

OWEN mid 50s / Element – Air
The oldest of the brothers, he is a figure of authority in their eyes, however, when his presence appears in their daily life, it is brief and unpredictable. Observer rather than speaker, control freak, he is secretive about his professional life which keeps him at a distance. Meanwhile he seems to have always contributed to the financial needs of the family. Passionate about Cosmos since childhood, his work as a designer is in link with spatial and military fields.

DALMAN mid 40s / Element – Water
Changing his physical appearance to obtain roles, he is an impulsive actor, momentarily living between hotels, struggling to maintain visibility in the industry. Emotionally engaged, impatient, hungry, his elusive attitude towards responsibilities make him perceived as an opportunist. He has an obsessive tendency to capture his life experience through films and photographs. Closest to his younger brother Joe, they have maintained a love hate relationship their entire lives.

JOE mid 40s / Element – Fire
The youngest of the sons, has worked in several jobs around the world before returning to the town of his childhood to work as a private driver. His search for a peaceful family life, with his love, Patricia and their young daughter Ys, follows a series of unfortunate and unfair collaborations that had always turned against him. Not far from his mother’s home, he has bought a small house with a wild piece of land, the purpose of nurturing an idyllic garden. About to realize his vision, he finds out that his new exclusive client (RAY) is closely involved in a lobbying world. His generosity is being tested.

PATRICIA - JOE’s partner late 30s / Element – Earth
Landscaper, her employment in municipal services has never satisfied her, therefor she is transforming her own wild garden into an experimental ground. She is devoted to her passion. The staggered hours of her companion are compromising what they had originally planned. She is apprehensive toward his mother temporarily staying in their home. Wendy’s death however has its consequence. She sees in the unpredictable arrival of the Octopus, a chance to heal her family.

RAY - JOE’s new employer
A well groomed, enigmatic wealthy man. Lobbying. He seems so much in control of his world he is untouchable.
